Black Sand Beach, v1 2024 Mixed media: Acrylic & Chalkboard Paint on Canvas 36"x48"
As an intuitive painter, I'm never quite sure what will come out on the canvas. I start painting and observe as the work evolves. These paintings surprised me... the color scheme, the glow. Where did these images come from?
My work is strongly influenced by feelings and childhood memories... it took me a few days to find the memory of this. In the 80's my mother wanted to write a children's book. I don't remember if she ever got to a story, but we would sit at the kitchen table with markers and create "illustrations" for the book. It was very 80's, can you feel Keith Haring's influence? Dayglow colors and glowing orbs, even pyramids ala "Desperately Seeking Susan". I love the nostalgia in these pieces.
As for the title, "Black Sand Beach", a beach is a place of contemplation, while black sand is volcanic. The energy of volcanoes provides the foundation of new land and new life. All of this plays into themes of rebirth and renewal in my work.
